BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University’s faculty-led Vietnam travel program for WWU students will take place from Dec. 11, 2010 to Jan. 2, 2011, with a hands-on study of Vietnam and America.
The application deadline for this program has been extended from March 10 to April 5, 2010.
Mart Stewart, WWU professor of History, will lead the 20-day study-abroad portion of the program in Vietnam during winter break. This portion of the course will be co-led by Vietnamese writer and translator, Ly Lan.
“This is a history course, but it will be very interdisciplinary, with a lot of attention to the interests of individual students,” said Stewart.
The program, “America and Vietnam,” will provide a total of six credits and is open to WWU students in all majors. A prerequisite course, also titled “America and Vietnam,” will be offered in fall 2010 or with instructor permission.
Vietnam is a land of extraordinary beauty and tumultuous history. It is undergoing an economic and social transformation that makes it one of the most fascinating places on the globe right now. Participants will study the complexities of the Vietnam War, learn about current and historical relationship between Vietnam and the United States and will undertake a service-learning project.
Students will be immersed in the local culture including activities with Vietnamese buddies. There will be opportunities to view the rural landscapes in the Mekong Delta and one of Vietnam's premier national parks, as well as visit the rapidly modernizing urban centers of Vietnam, Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon) and Hanoi.
