WWU Music Department to Host Clarinetist Carl Johan Stjernstrom in collaboration with WWU Faculty on March 3

BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University’s Department of Music will host Swedish clarinetist Carl Johan Stjernström at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, March 3 in the Performing Arts Center Concert Hall.

The performance is free and open to the public.

In an evening of chamber music, Stjernström will collaborate with WWU faculty members and pianists Jeffrey Gilliam and Milica Jelaca Jovanovic as well as with the WWU Faculty String Quartet: Walter Schwede and Grant Donnellan, violins; Eric Kean, viola; and John Friesen, cello. The program will celebrate the works of Mozart and Schumann.

Stjernström grew up in the Swedish town of Arboga.  At the age of 18 he won the competition contest, "Open House for Young Musicians" in Berwaldhallen, Stockholm.  Stjernström was awarded a Master of Fine Arts in Music from Lunds University, studying under Thomas Kumlien at the Academy of Music of Malmö in 1989.

Stjernström is active as a soloist and chamber musician and is often engaged by theatres and symphony orchestras.
