BELLINGHAM As part of the Arthur Hicks Piano Recital Series, Western Washington University will feature the award-winning pianist Mikhail Yanovitsky at 8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Concert Hall.

The evening program will include a variety of works by Schubert, Chopin, Scriabin, and Liszt.

In describing Yanovitsky’s work, The New York Times said, “Particularly striking was the sound: big without brutality, rich but always clear and in focus.”

Born in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), Yanovitsky began his studies at the Leningrad Special Music School for gifted children.  At the age of 18 he entered the Moscow Conservatory, and shortly after arriving in the U.S., he won the Young Concert Artists International Auditions in 1991.

Yanovitsky is the recipient of many awards, including First Prize in the Piano Concerto Competition in Cantu, Italy; two Gina Bauchauer Piano Scholarships for graduate studies at the Julliard School; and the Aaron and Irene Diamond Soloist Prize for Young Concert Artists.

He has appeared as a featured soloist with the San Francisco Symphony, the Moscow Philharmonic, the Cape Town Symphony, the Toho Gakuen Orchestra, the Shanghai Symphony, and the Philadelphia Chamber Orchestra.  He joined the roster of Steinway Artists in 2001.

In conjunction with his Arthur Hicks Piano Series recital, Yanovitsky will conduct a master class for young musicians from 9:50-11:50 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 26 in the PAC Concert Hall.  The master class is free and open to the public.  For additional information about this educational opportunity, please contact the WWU Department of Music at (360) 650-3130.

Tickets for Yanovitsky’s performance are available through the WWU Box Office and cost $16 for adults, $13 for seniors, and $9 for students with a valid ID.  WWU Box Office hours are from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and one hour prior to the performance.  For individual tickets or disability accommodations, contact the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146, or visit http://www.tickets.wwu.edu.

The Arthur Hicks Piano Scholarship Recital series enables Western to bring professional performers to campus, and provides scholarship revenue for talented WWU piano students.
