Scientists funded by the National Science Foundation and NOAA have recorded the deepest erupting volcano yet discovered -- West Mata Volcano -- describing high-definition video of the undersea eruption as "spectacular."

"For the first time we have been able to examine, up close, the way ocean islands and submarine volcanoes are born," said Barbara Ransom, program director in NSF's Division of Ocean Sciences. "The unusual primitive compositions of the West Mata eruption lavas have much to tell us."

Western Washington University’s Youth Programs has announced a new summer program name and format for students entering grades 4-9, Odyssey of Science and Arts, formerly known as Summer Programs for Youth (SPY).

The new Odyssey of Science and Arts program is offered in two half-day sessions, and students may choose to sign up for the full day by selecting a morning and afternoon topic during the weeklong program. The courses focus on in-depth, hands-on learning and feature a variety of unique academic topics not often offered elsewhere.

“Parents have been asking for this type of format for some time and now we are able to deliver the program effectively. The focus is on what we do best, academic enrichment, and this change will allow us to maintain the quality of the programs, while keeping costs lower for everyone,” said Debbie Gibbons, WWU Youth Programs manager.
