BELLINGHAM Western Washington University’s Office of Admissions has created a new video scholarship competition facilitated by YouTube to connect with high school seniors interested in attending Western next fall.

The new “Why Western? Video Scholarship Contest” challenges prospective WWU freshmen to showcase their creativity and compose a video telling their stories about what has attracted them to Western and why they think it is the best place for them to grow and learn. The videos will be judged with the top three videos receiving scholarships of as much as $2,000 to help defray the cost of the student’s first year on campus.

The contest will be facilitated by YouTube and promoted through the new WWU Admissions Fan Page on Facebook and elsewhere.

“Western is looking for hard-working, creative students who are focused on building successful lives, careers and strong futures for their families and communities – and this is just one new way for us to reach out to them,” said WWU Admissions Counselor Kayle Walls.

Student-produced videos will need to be submitted to the WWU Office of Admissions by Jan. 31, 2010. The videos will be judged by the scholarship committee on factors such as creativity, relevance to WWU, number of YouTube views, and the students’ ability to demonstrate their unique talents and personalities

Contest winners must be admitted and enroll for the first time at Western Washington University in fall quarter 2010 in order to claim the scholarship award.
