WWU to Host Symposium on Immigration Reform and the Northern Border Nov. 12

BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Border Policy Research Institute (BPRI) and Center for Canadian American Studies will host “Immigration Reform: What’s at Stake for the Northern Border” from 3-4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Nov. 12 in the WWU Library Presentation Room.

This event is free and open to the public.

Immigration has become an issue of border security as well as an issue of human rights and economic competitiveness. This symposium will focus on the recently released report of the Council on Foreign Relations’ (CFR) Independent Task Force on Immigration Reform, its recommendations for changing U.S. immigration policy, and how immigration policies and practices apply to Canada-U.S. border security.

Presenters at the symposium are:

Margaret Stock, professor, U.S. Military Academy at West Point and BPRI visiting fellow. Stock, a national expert on immigration, borders, and national security, has taught constitutional law, military law, and international relations at West Point. She was a member of the CFR Independent Task Force.
Edward Alden, Bernard L. Schwartz senior fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations. Alden, former Bureau Chief for the Financial Times, is the author of “The Closing of the American Border: Terrorism, Immigration and Security Since 9/11.” He was the project director for the CFR Independent Task Force report.
