BELLINGHAM—Western Washington University’s Ralph Munro Institute for Civic Education, in concert with the Whatcom Bar Association and the City of Bellingham, is holding a public forum at 7 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, in the Bellingham City Council chambers.
The forum, titled “The Role of the Courts in American Society,” will feature panelists with a diverse range of experiences and judicial philosophies.
“From the U.S. Supreme Court to local magistrates, courts play an important role in American society,” said Sara Weir, the Munro Distinguished Professor of Civics Education at WWU and chair of the Political Science Department. “The panel of legal experts will discuss some of the ways courts impact citizens in their everyday lives.”
Panelists include Mary Kay Becker, a judge with the Washington State Court of Appeals; Raquel Montoya-Lewis, chief judge of the Lummi Tribal Court and an assistant professor in WWU’s Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies; attorney Deborra Garrett; attorney Doug Hyldahl; and attorney Doug Shepherd. Weir will moderate the forum, which will be shown on Bellingham TV Channel 10.
Audience members will have the opportunity to ask questions of panelists after the formal presentations. Attendance at this event is free of charge.
The Munro Institute for Civic Education is a program of WWU’s Political Science Department and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences. Named for former Washington Secretary of State Ralph Munro, the mission of the institute is to promote civic education training for the public and especially social studies and civics teachers.
