  • Vikings shut out by Grand Canyon
Playing in 100-degree heat, Western Washington University fell 4-0 to Grand Canyon University in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday at the GCU Soccer Field.
The Vikings dropped to 3-4-0, and Grand Canyon improved to 3-1-1.
"I really don't think the heat had anything to do with it," said Western coach Travis Connell. "They started the game really well and mentally we just couldn't recover and change it. We kept on doing the same things, and that wasn't good enough. Mentally we were just a little bit soft today, and they're a good team and they made us pay for it."

  • Hardball dreams stay alive in Border Baseball League
Steve Chapman says if he and his wife are blessed with children, and his dream is to have them cheer him on in baseball.
That means the 1999 Sehome graduate might then be in his 40s. However, several players in Whatcom County's Borderline Baseball League already have accomplished that dream and then some.
For example, at age 44, fleet center fielder Jon Dillon's goal is "not only to be playing ball in my 60s, but stealing bases, too."
Dillon, an information technology specialist at Western Washington University, has played hardball almost every year since he was 7, except for his four years in the U.S. Army.
Dillon, who batted .452 as the center fielder for the Mariners, played at Chaffey Community College in Southern California after helping sectional small-schools champion Serrano go 25-1 in his senior high school season.

  • Who's Who: Jennifer Shelton
Jennifer Shelton's office smells like coffee, a scent that permeates from the one-cup espresso machine on her left and the golden mug to her right.
“My father was an avid coffee drinker – I grew up going to coffee shops with him,” she said.
But after years of working long hours for little pay, she went back to school at Western Washington University for her master's degree.
And that's when she found small-business counseling.
