Summer travels

Almost 39 years after she was last there on a Quaker mission, WWU's Marie Eaton, a faculty member in the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, returned to Kenya this summer as part of the WWU contingent from the Center for Service Learning and other Western departments to participate in the Slum Doctor Programme's project at the Ombogo Girl's Academy in Homa. Eaton's blog from the trip can be read on Blogspot. At right: Masai warriors survey a water hole struck by drought.

PLEASE READ: HazMat exercise on Wednesday

Several local fire and emergency response organizations plan to hold a fire and hazardous materials response exercise on the WWU campus Wednesday.
The exercise will take place at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Chemistry Building. Involved in the training at WWU are chemistry professors Jim Vyvyan and Greg O’Neill, chemistry safety officer Gary Carlton, selected students, University Police, Facilities Management, Parking Services and Environmental Health and Safety.
The scenario used for the exercise involves a chemical spill in a research laboratory; note that no actual chemicals will be used in the exercise.

Flags at half-staff today

Governor Chris Gregoire has directed that flags at all Washington State agency facilities be lowered to half-staff today in memory of U. S. Army Specialist Dennis M. Williams, 24, of Federal Way, who died Aug. 25 in Afghanistan, of injuries sustained when his military vehicle encountered an improvised explosive device.

  • WWU hosting HazMat drill today
Whatcom County's hazardous materials team plans to conduct a drill at Western Washington University on Wednesday, Sept. 2.
The team will be responding to a staged spill of chemicals in the university's chemistry building, and will be treating a student pretending to be injured in the spill, said Assistant Chief Andy Day of the Bellingham Fire Department.
The drill begins at 1:45 p.m., so anyone on campus should expect to see plenty of firefighters, police officers and university staff at the building, Day said.

  • Four-goal burst leads WWU over Evergreen
Western Washington University scored four goals in a 20-minute span of the first half and went on to claim a 4-1 triumph over The Evergreen State College in a non-conference men's soccer game Tuesday at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.

  • Boulder, Colo. developer to head Bellingham PDA
The Bellingham Public Development Authority has hired James R. Long of Boulder, Colo., as its first director.
The board unanimously approved hiring Long at a Tuesday, Sept. 1, meeting.
Long said his first job will be development of a strategic plan for PDA-controlled real estate. He said the PDA's real estate holdings should fit into a larger economic development plan that identifies what kinds of job-generating companies are both desirable and likely to locate here. He expects to work with the Port of Bellingham, Western Washington University and economic development groups as part of the planning effort.
