Summer travels

Almost 39 years after she was last there on a Quaker mission, WWU's Marie Eaton, a faculty member in the Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, returned to Kenya this summer as part of the WWU contingent from the Center for Service Learning and other Western departments to participate in the Slum Doctor Programme's project at the Ombogo Girl's Academy in Homa. Eaton's blog from the trip can be read on Blogspot. At right: Lake Victoria at sunset.

PLEASE READ: HazMat exercise on Wednesday

Several local fire and emergency response organizations plan to hold a fire and hazardous materials response exercise on the WWU campus Wednesday.
The exercise will take place at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Chemistry Building. Involved in the training at WWU are chemistry professors Jim Vyvyan and Greg O’Neill, chemistry safety officer Gary Carlton, selected students, University Police, Facilities Management, Parking Services and Environmental Health and Safety.
The scenario used for the exercise involves a chemical spill in a research laboratory; note that no actual chemicals will be used in the exercise.
For more information on this training exercise, please contact the Office of University Communications at ext. 3350.

Miller Market will be only dining venue open during steam shutdown

Miller Market, which opened on Red Square in its temporary location Aug. 24, will be the only University Dining venue open during the annual steam shutdown, which occurs from Aug. 30 to Sept. 10.

The Whatcom County Health Department requires accessibility to hot running water in restrooms for our customers in order for us to prepare and serve made-to-order food and beverages. During the steam shutdown, all hot running water on campus is turned off.

  • Robinson's 'One more year'
Cursed? That thought has crossed Krystal Robinson’s mind the last several years – though it is her knees, not her mind, that seem to be under some sort of diabolical spell.
Now, however, it’s a case of mind over matter for the former Kentridge High basketball star.
With a passion on the court that clearly makes her more driven than most of her hoop-playing counterparts, Robinson – who in recent years seems to have spent as much time rehabbing as she has rebounding – will give the game one final go this coming winter when she returns to action at Western Washington University.
