Several local fire and emergency response organizations plan to hold a fire and hazardous materials response exercise on the WWU campus Wednesday. The exercise will take place at 1:45 p.m. Sept. 2 in the Chemistry Building. Involved in the training at WWU are chemistry professors Jim Vyvyan and Greg O’Neill, chemistry safety officer Gary Carlton, selected students, University Police, Facilities Management, Parking Services and Environmental Health and Safety. The scenario used for the exercise involves a chemical spill in a research laboratory; note that no actual chemicals will be used in the exercise. - WWU professor gets $250,00 grant to study impact of disasters
A Western Washington University assistant professor has received a $250,000 grant to study the impacts of disaster on infrastructure and the economy. Scott Miles, assistant professor of planning and environmental policy in the department of Environmental Studies, received the grant from the National Science Foundation Civil, Mechanical and Manufacturing Innovation Program. - WWU volleyball closes out California tourney with a pair of wins
Outside hitters Megan Amundson and Marlayna Geary combined for 66 kills and 51 digs, each posting double-doubles in both matches, as nationally ranked Western Washington University closed out the Southern California Volleyball Classic with two victories Saturday, Aug. 30, defeating Ashland (Ohio) 24-26, 25-21, 25-20, 25-20 and Cal State L.A., 25-18, 23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 15-12.
- Men's soccer: WWU loses season opener on late goal
Forward Ben Langwith scored with 2:07 left in overtime, leading nationally ranked Sonoma State University to a 2-1 victory over Western Washington University in a men's college soccer game Saturday, Aug. 30, at Orca Field on the campus of Whatcom Community College.
- Women's soccer: WWU falls in opener
Forward Ali Sward scored a pair of goals and added an assist, leading Chico State to a 3-1 victory over Western Washington University in the season-opening women's soccer game for both schools Saturday at Orca Field on the Whatcom Community College campus. Western, ranked No. 12 in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America NCAA Division II National Preseason Poll, suffered just its second loss in the last 17 home games despite having a 12-9 advantage in shots.
