  • WWU ranks among best universities in the West
Western Washington University continues to be one of the best universities in the country, according to the annual U.S. News and World Report college ranking. WWU is the third-best public, master's-degree-granting university in the West, a region stretching from Texas to Alaska, according to the ranking. WWU is the highest-ranking school in the Pacific Northwest on the list.

  • Men's soccer preview: Explosive team will rely on steady hands
Perhaps no player on the Western Washington men's soccer team is more excited to take the field on Saturday, Aug. 29, than Cameron Copps-Tilley.
After an offseason that involved rigorous treatment for a slipped disc in his back and then an urgent appendectomy in late July, the returning first-team All-GNAC goalkeeper is planning on being ready when the Vikings take on No. 17 Sonoma State at 7 p.m. at Whatcom Community College.

  • Women's soccer preview: Talented freshman to start in goal
The cleats Jamie Arthurs will lace up this season must be sizable.
The redshirt freshman is slated to start in goal for a senior-laden Western Washington University women's soccer team that last year won the GNAC with a 17-3-2 record, set a school record with a 16-game unbeaten streak, advanced to the quarterfinals at the 2008 NCAA Division II national tournament and returns every starter except one - Kylie Broadbent, the first-team All-GNAC goalkeeper that earned All-region honors as a senior.

  • Cross-country preview: Talented squads both ranked in Top 10
The Western Washington University men's cross country team is ranked seventh and the women's squad is 10th in their respective U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association NCAA Division II National Preseason Polls.
Both teams placed 10th at last year's NCAA II National Championships.

  • Volleyball: WWU opens season with tough opponent
It shouldn't take long for the Western Washington University volleyball team to find out how it stacks up against the best in nation.
About two matches to be exact.
The Vikings open the 2009 season on the road at the SoCal Classic in Carson, Calif., with four matches, including two against a pair of the top-ranked teams in NCAA Division II.
