BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s Office of Admissions will host candidates of the Washington State Achievers Program Scholarship on Wednesday, July 22, as part of its efforts to increase multi-cultural student enrollment.

The program is part of Bill and Melinda Gates College Success Foundation and is aimed towards providing higher education opportunities to students in Washington, especially low-income students and students of color. Scholarships are awarded to juniors enrolled at any of the 16 high schools selected to participate in the Achievers programs, who have demonstrated academic potential in their school work.  The scholarship provides tuition and fees in varying amounts to be applied to participating Washington colleges and universities. This year is the 10th and final cohort of scholarship recipients.

A group of 150 high school students from five Seattle public schools were chosen to visit Western because of their proximity to the University, Admissions Counselor and Multi-Cultural Outreach Coordinator Natalie Washington said.

“A lot of (high school) students don’t know a lot about Western or have a chance to visit the campus, despite how close we are to Seattle,” Washington said. “This opportunity takes away the burden of the financial costs associated with traveling here.”

During their visit the students will engage in workshops, campus tours and a student question-and-answer forum.  They will also view campus resources and an admissions presentation.

For more information on the event, contact Admissions Counselor and Multi-Cultural Outreach Coordinator Natalie Washington at (360) 650-3437, or e-mail natalie.washington@wwu.edu.
