Work continues on bike, pedestrian paths

This summer, the folks in Facilities Management are revising bike and pedestrian circulation in the south campus area. The project includes revision to the bicycle route from Bill McDonald Parkway through Fairhaven College and out to College Way. The other portion is pedestrian and bicycle routing around the Academic Instructional Center and the Wade King Student Recreation Center. Officials anticipate that the project will be complete by the start of school in the fall.

The Bellingham Herald

  • WTA board members support WWU bus pass deal
A majority of Whatcom Transportation Authority leaders like a proposed deal that would require Western Washington University to pay about 25 percent more for prepaid student bus passes.

The increase would be spread over the next three academic years.
The WTA board's executive committee discussed the proposed deal Thursday, July 9, and voted to recommend that the full board approve it. Five members of the committee, who make up more than half of the board, voted in favor of the deal, and another member expressed support but was absent for the vote.

  • Bellingham's RMC Architects tackles Western library project
RMC Architects is designing a new space for Wilson Library's Special Collections Department at Western Washington University.

The department is currently located on the second level of the library with archival storage spread throughout the building. The new design will consolidate it to the sixth floor and accommodate future growth, as well as the need for archival environment upgrades, according to a company press release.

The Seattle Times

  • Health costs going up for state employees
Health care costs will be going up in January for state employees, teachers and retirees.

The Public Employees Benefits Board adopted higher co-payments and deductibles Wednesday on a 4-3 vote. The three no votes came from representatives of state worker and retiree groups.

About 336,000 state employees and retirees and their dependents will be affected through health-insurance policies they receive through the state Health Care Authority.

Some copays and deductibles could double. Monthly premiums for the state's most popular plan, Uniform Medical, increase from $82 to $123 for full family coverage. Premiums for some plans, including Group Health Classic and Group Health Value, drop, but those plans see new or higher deductibles in 2010.

Barhanovich, a member of the Western Washington University golf team, fell behind when Anderson birdied the second hole and was never able to draw back to even.
