Industrial Design students win scholarships in annual contest

Six students from Western Washington University's Industrial Design program received recognition and $6,000 in scholarships for their children's furniture designs as a part of the annual Mount Baker Products Furniture Design Competition. Western students, children, parents and a panel of three community members selected the winning designs among 20 different student projects.

Western Card office making a summer move

The Western Card Office has a new temporary location. From July 17 until Sept. 25, the Card Office will be in Wilson Library Room 165 (on High Street across from the bookstore).
Hours are 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.

  • Local golfers gear up for PNGA tournaments
    Four of Whatcom County's top amateur golfers hope to put their names among some of golf's greats by winning the 108th Pacific Northwest Golf Association's Men's Amateur Championship this week at The Home Course in Dupont.
    Matt Rawitzer, who was a two-time state champion at Squalicum High School, leads the way along with his chief Northwest Conference rival over the past four seasons, Will Holdridge, who led Lynden to the Class 2A team title in May. Bellingham's Bryant Dhondt and Martin White are also entered in the tournament, which begins Monday, July 6, with the first of two days of a 36-hole stroke-play qualifier to set the field for the 64-player match-play bracket.
    Former Western Washington University All-American Jacob Koppenberg also is entered in the field.

  • WWU to offer weekend MBA at Everett's University Center
    Western Washington University's College of Business and Economics will offer a weekend MBA program in Everett starting next January.
    Classes will be held on alternating Fridays and Saturdays at Everett Community College's University Center and will take 24 months to complete.

  • Second Seattle-Vancouver Amtrak run to begin next month
    The Canadian government has dropped its insistence Amtrak pay $1,500 per day for immigration and customs inspections for passengers on a planned second daily train between Seattle and Vancouver. As a result, service will expand next month, and continue on at least through the 2010 Winter Olympics and paralympics in Vancouver.
    Cascadia Center has worked closely with the Washington State Department of Transportation, the Pacific Northwest Economic Region, The Border Policy Research Institute at Western Washington University, Vancouver Mayor Gregor Robertson and other allies to win approval of the increased frequency.
