Sam Green, right, Washington state's first poet laureate and a WWU alumnus, was a guest on "KUOW Presents" yesterday, where he read and discussed his poem, "On Board the Sea Lassie, Summer 1944." Miller Market closed

The Miller Market eatery in Miller Hall is closed in anticipation of the renovation to the building being done in the next two years.

The market will open in its temporary location -- a 70-foot trailer in Red Square -- on Aug. 24.

Until then, the Tony's Coffee location in Haggard Hall on the other side of Red Square will be open Monday through Friday, from 7:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.

Intersession parking information

Parking Services will be closed M-W, June 15-17 to attend training. Enforcement will be suspended for those three days: however disability and reserved spaces will remain in effect.

June 18-19, vehicles must display a spring, academic, annual parking permit, or a spring or academic Viking Xpress bus pass.

Permits/Xpress passes will be valid in lots with the exception of R lots, 6V, 8G, 10G, 11G, 23V, 25G, 29G, Chemistry-Biology-Sciences and the Engineering Technology lot.

Those who do not have current permits may purchase one at Parking Services on June 18-19, 7:15 AM-4:30 PM.

Permits/Xpress passes not valid at parking meters. Xpress passes must be clearly displayed. Permit holders will need to return to their regular assigned lot on June 22. If you need emergency assistance contact University Police at x3555.

  • WWU students, publications win journalism awards
    Six Western Washington University journalism students and publications recently received awards from the Society of Professional Journalists.
    Students Gabrielle Nomura, Mark Malijan, Sidonie DeCassis and Cody Gillen received Regional Mark of Excellence awards for their work in student journalism in the region covering Washington, Oregon, Alaska, Idaho and Montana. Western publications Klipsun and The Planet won first and second place, respectively, for the region’s student magazines.

  • WWU student wins scholarship to study in Cairo
    A Western Washington University student has won a scholarship to spend a year in Cairo, Egypt, studying the Arabic language.
    Dana Rafter won the National Security Education Program’s Boren Scholarship, which provides students with up to $20,000 to study in countries that are important to U.S. interests but aren’t often visited for study abroad programs. Rafter will leave for Cairo’s Al-Dawin Institute in August.
    Rafter hopes to graduate in 2011 with a major in Arabic studies and German, with hopes of becoming a diplomat.

  • WWU names its athletes of the year
    For the first time in school history, Western Washington University has two athletes sharing each of its Male and Female Athlete of the Year awards.
    The two 2008-09 male Athlete of the Year honorees are senior guard Ira Graham, who helped the Vikings to the school's first outright Great Northwest Athletic Conference title in men's basketball, and senior Jake Koppenberg, who placed 12th at nationals and became the school's first golfer named to the prestigious All-Nicklaus Team.
    The female Athlete of the Year award was shared by senior rower Audrey Coon, who captained Western to an unprecedented fifth straight national team title, and sophomore distance runner Sarah Porter, who earned All-America honors in three sports.

  • Superkid: Jordan Steeves
    Jordan Steeves recently earned $5,000 for his Everett High School science program and $5,000 for himself by winning a statewide Imagine Tomorrow competition at Washington State University by designing an eco-friendly water bottle called "Cykle." Steeves plans to attend Western Washington University and study Environmental Science.
