BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University student Dana Rafter of Lynwood has won a Boren Scholarship to spend a year at Al-Dawin Institute in Cairo, Egypt, to study Arabic.
The scholarship will provide Rafter with up to $20,000 to cover round-trip airfare, tuition and most of his living expenses. Rafter will head to Egypt at the end of August.
"Studying Arabic in the Middle East has long been an aspiration of mine, and when I learned I received this scholarship, it was hard to believe," Rafter said. "I am pleased that such a program exists to give students the opportunity to add a valuable international component to their education."
Rafter, a Lynwood native, is currently studying Arabic, German and International Politics at the University of Graz in Graz, Austria. Rafter is working toward a major in German and Arabic Studies at WWU and expects to graduate in 2011. Rafter said he hopes to become a diplomat.
The National Security Education Program's Boren Scholarship provides students with up to $20,000 to study in countries that are vital to U.S. interests yet are underrepresented in study abroad.
