BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Academic Instructional Center (AIC) received the honor award at the Civic Design Awards held by the American Institute of Architects (AIA) Washington Council on May 14.
The AIA presented WWU with one of two honor awards that pay tribute to excellence in public architecture.
NAC Architecture, Seattle, was the Executive Architect in association with Opsis Architecture of Portland, the Design Architect for the AIC, which first opened for classes on Jan. 6. The $50 million building, funded by the Washington state legislature, is approximately 120,000 square feet in size and is comprised of two wings, a departmental building wing and an academic wing, connected by a skybridge. The University has applied for LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) designation for the AIC.
"From a planning point of view, [the AIC] really completed the south part of campus. We liked the transparency; we liked the use of a variety of materials, such as wood and concrete in even the small details. It was very thoughtfully done," said AIA judge Rick Sundberg of Olson Sundberg Kundig Allen Architects.
