Photo exhibit of Berlin Wall runs through June 2

A touring photo exhibition commemorating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall will be on display at Western Washington University's Wilson Library through June 2.

“Icons of a Border Installation: Photographic Search for Traces in Today’s Berlin,” makes its only appearance in the Pacific Northwest at Western.

EO Office extends deadline to June 5 for submissions to the Diversity Handbook

WWU's Equal Opportunity Office is compiling the 2009-2010 Diversity Handbook for the university. If you are engaged in diversity efforts through classes, programs, activities or projects, the office would like to be sure to include your important work and would most appreciate your submission to the 2009-2010 Diversity Handbook. Western Libraries seeks feedback on strategic plan

Western Libraries is engaged in a strategic planning process this year to develop a three-year plan aligned with the university’s strategic initiatives. This plan will guide the library in its expenditures and actions throughout the budget crisis.

Students, faculty and staff from various areas of campus were involved in the process, and broader input and feedback is now being sought. The plan is available here, and comments are being taken on Viking Village until June 5. Let them know what you think!


Today on campus
As a part of the Huxley College Department of Environmental Studies Colloquium, recent Huxley graduate Brett Matulis will discuss the focus of his master's degree work in a presentation titled "Reconstructing Nature Travel: Social-Nature and Equitable Ecotourism."

The presentation is free and open to the public, and will take place at 3 p.m. Friday, May 22, in Communications Facility room 125.


This weekend: World-famous philosophers to speak at student conference

Philosophers Kit Fine, from New York University, and Micheal Rea, from the University of Notre Dame, will speak on campus this weekend as part of the seventh annual Northwest Student Philosophy Conference. Click here for more information.

The spring installment of WWU’s Global Health and Social Justice lecture series will feature a lecture titled “Poaching Health Workers From Poor Countries: Is That an Ethical Way to Solve America’s Health Workforce Shortage?” The lecture will take place from 7 to 9 p.m. May 27 at St. Luke’s Community Health Education Center in Room A.   • Viking selected to All-Star team
    Western Washington University women's rowing team captain Audrey Coon
    has been named to the first-team College Sports Information Directors of America/ESPN The Magazine College Division District VIII Academic At-Large All-Star Team announced on Thursday, May 21.
    It was the third straight selection for Coon, who holds the No. 7 seat in the Vikings' nationally No. 2 ranked varsity eight which will compete for a fifth straight NCAA Division II national title on May 29-31 at Camden, N.J.

  • Porter places fifth in women's 10,000
    Western Washington University's Sarah Porter
    placed fifth in the women's 10,000 meters Thursday, May 21, in opening-day action at the NCAA Division II Outdoor Track & Field National Championships at San Angelo, Texas.
    Porter, who was timed in 36:02.72, was an automatic qualifier in the event, being ranked fifth nationally entering the meet.

  • Q&A with Ski to Sea race director and WWU alum Pete Coy
    While the race may change from year to year, two things have remained relatively constant during the 36-year history of Ski to Sea - a goal to be the premier community sporting event Whatcom County and the race director.
    Pete Coy, who is preparing to serve as Ski to Sea Race Director for the third time, is only the third person to hold the post. During his short tenure, the race has entered the electronic timing age and this year will undergo a major face lift to the mountain biking leg.
    Coy has been a Bellingham resident since he moved to the area in 1965 to attend Western Washington University. He is a salesman for RE/MAX Whatcom County, and he and his wife have two children and two grandkids who no longer live in Whatcom County.

  • WWU alum is art director for new Sony game The Agency
    Corey Dangel is the Art Director for Sony Online Entertainment's upcoming PLAYSTATION 3 & PC title The Agency. Prior to joining SOE, Corey spent nearly a dozen years "living the life of an elite art director" in Microsoft's games division. Focused principally on online games, Corey spent his first tour of duty working on several groundbreaking titles including the Internet Gaming Zone, Fighter Ace, and Asheron's Call.
    Corey attended Western Washington University, where he graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Visual Communication.

  • Western alum to serve as artist-in-residence in Ritzville School District
    The Historic Ritzville Days Western Art Show is sponsoring an enrichment program for students in the Ritzville School District as well as a Youth Art Experience downtown on Saturday during the Memorial Day weekend.
    Eileen Martin will serve as an artist-in-residence in the Ritzville School District this Thursday and Friday.
    During her teaching tenure she spent 10 years working with students in Gifted/Talented classes. As a result she went to Western Washington University to take classes involving creativity.
    “Five years later I ended up with a studio art degree,” Martin said.
