BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Youth Programs run from June 22 through Aug. 21 and offer an alternative to the standard summer camp experience, with unique academic topics in science and the arts.
Western's Summer Programs for Youth (SPY) are designed to spark the interest of students entering grades 4-12, who are naturally drawn to more academic-based subjects such as Veterinary Science, Biology, Chemistry and Physics, or topics in the arts including Guitar, Photography, and Filmmaking. WWU faculty and staff oversee the programs, which provide a fun hands-on learning experience. An overnight residence hall option is available for high school students.
Western Kids Camp, for students entering grades K-6, combines academic enrichment and recreational opportunities during weekly theme-based programs. This year's lineup includes the following topics:
- June 22-26, "Archeology"
- June 29-July 2, "America: Past, Present and Future"
- July 6-10, "You Are What You Eat"
- July 13-17, "Hobbies and Habitats"
- July 20-24, "Endangered Species"
- July 27-31, "Culture Shock"
- Aug. 3-7, "Operation Cooperation"
- Aug. 10-14, "Everyone's a Star"
- Aug.17-21, "Celebrations Around the World"
Additional program offerings for youth include College Quest (grades 10-12), WWU Lakewood Jr. Sailing (and windsurfing), Dance Academy for Youth, Summer Youth Theatre Institute, and "Grandparents U."
Online registration is open now. Early registration is encouraged to reserve your favorite topic. For more information and for a complete schedule of summer programs, please visit www.wwu.edu/youth, or e-mail eesp@wwu.edu or call (360) 650-3308.
