BELLINGHAM - Assistant Professor Scott B. Miles of Western Washington University's Huxley College of the Environment has been awarded the Next Generation of Hazards and Disasters Researchers' Fellowship from the National Science Foundation.
The fellowship will provide Miles with a set of experienced researchers of hazard and disaster studies as mentors. These mentors will provide Miles with guidance, collaboration, networking and feedback to assist him in writing, research and conducting disaster reduction community service. The fellowship will also bolster Miles' fundraising capabilities for future research and service projects.
"I'm humbled to be in the company of so many highly accomplished researchers, both the mentors and the fellows," Miles said. "I'm thrilled at the chance to improve my effectiveness in accomplishing disaster risk reduction. Particularly, I'm looking forward to the chance to leverage this opportunity to work more directly on disaster risk reduction in Whatcom County and Washington state."
Miles is an expert on disaster risk reduction, decision sciences and urban planning. Since 2006, Miles has taught subjects at Western that are parallel to his broad research goal of disaster mitigation through human-centered design of analysis tools and processes for applying those tools.
