BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Department of Theatre Arts will present "Summer Youth Theatre Institute 2009" from June 22 through July 10 on Western's campus.

Now in its fourth year, the Summer Youth Theatre Institute (SYTI) is a fun program for all ages that provides an opportunity for local community youth to collaborate with their peers, learn from WWU Drama in Education students, and perform theatre in public showcases.  This year also features the opportunity for participants of the secondary level SYTI program to perform with their SYTI leaders in "Schoolhouse Rock, Live!"

SYTI 2009 offers two levels of training: one for elementary students and one for secondary students.  Youth in grades 1 through 5 in Fall of 2009 can sign up for the elementary SYTI running Monday-Friday, June 22- July 3, from 9 a.m. until noon, with showcase performances at noon and 7 p.m. on Friday, July 3.   Youth in grades 6 through 12 can participate in the secondary level SYTI running  Monday-Friday, June 22 -July 10, from 1-4 p.m., with a showcase performance at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 10.

Registration fees are $250 for elementary SYTI and $350 for secondary SYTI. A discount of $25 at time of registration is available for WWU Alumni Association members, as well as for WWU faculty and staff.  The priority registration deadline for SYTI is June 15.

In addition to the 3-week intensive training in SYTI, for an additional $50, the secondary level SYTI participants can also perform in '"Schoolhouse Rock, Live!" alongside their SYTI leaders.  Rehearsals will begin July 6 and continue Monday-Friday from 5:30-8 p.m. until the performance begins on July 23.  Performance dates will be at 7:30 p.m. July 23-25 and July 29-Aug. 1, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, July 26 and Sunday, Aug. 2, in the Old Main Theatre.
