BELLINGHAM - This summer, Western Washington University is offering a finance course that will introduce individuals to various aspects of personal finance including the basic value of money over time, retirement and estate planning, buying a house or car, insurance types, tax planning, and basic investing.
During the course participants will:
- Learn about the U.S. federal income tax system
- Explore the returns and risks of different categories of investments
- Fill out tax forms and learn about deductions
- Compare HMO's and PPO's
- Discuss current events that have an impact on financial planning
After successful completion of the course, participants should feel comfortable making credit decisions, completing a basic tax return, determining how to accomplish retirement goals, distinguishing between basic types of investments (such as stocks, bonds, mutual funds and money market securities), and determining life and health insurance needs.
The course, Finance 215, is intended for individuals who are not Finance majors. The course is offered during WWU's Summer Session and it is open to the public, not just to WWU students.
