BELLINGHAM—Hideko Tamura Snider, a survivor of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima during World War II, will speak on the opening night of Western Washington University’s sixth-annual CASCAID Conference on Global Citizenship to be held on Friday, May 1, and Saturday, May 2, on the WWU campus. This year’s theme is “Global Citizenship.”

Snider, author of the book “One Sunny Day: A Child’s Memories of Hiroshima” and an activist working toward global nuclear disarmament, will link the concepts of global citizenship and peace activism in her keynote address, which will take place at 7 p.m. May 1 in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room.

The conference, which is free and open to the public, will begin May 1 with academic paper presentations by undergraduate students and a youth leadership workshop with high school students in the afternoon, followed by Snider’s address.

Conference workshop sessions will begin at 10 a.m. May 2 and will run until 5 p.m. All Saturday activities will be located in the Communication Facility and will feature a wide variety of workshops and discussions centered on the conference theme and presented by various campus groups and community organizations. Issues that will be explored include migrant labor, human trafficking, the power of film, community organizing, eco-stewardship, indigenous sovereignty and interfaith dialogues. Conference organizers intend to have a broad and inclusive conference that will allow people of differing perspectives to come together to have a meaningful exchange of views.

CASCAID is a service program of the Western Washington Debate Union. The conference is co-hosted by the Whatcom Human Rights Taskforce, the ASP Civil Controversy series of WWU, the WWU Department of Communication and the Western Washington University Debate Union.

All aspects of the conference are free and open to all attendees and participants. No registration is required. Free parking will be available on the days of the conference in the C lots near Fairhaven College. Please check with the Visitors Center on campus for specifics. Snacks and beverages will be served throughout the weekend.
