BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University will entertain families, students and the community May 15-17 during Showtime Family Weekend.
Activities include festivals, live music, student performances, planetarium shows, nature cruises, a golf tournament and other outdoor activities.
The events below are free and take place on the WWU's campus unless otherwise noted. Friday through Sunday, May 15-17
- 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday - The Wade King Student Recreation Center will offer a discounted $4.50 day pass for those accompanied by a WWU student with a valid ID. Free tours will also be given every 30 minutes on Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.
- 7:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday and noon to midnight Sunday - Wilson Library self-guided Passport Tours. As part of the tour you will find traveler's tips for using the library and collect "visas" at each of the service desks. End your tour by coming back to the reference desk for a free souvenir. Alternately, use your portable media player and take a Library Audio Tour; the podcast can be downloaded at http://ww.library.wwu.edu/ref/inst/podcast/. From noon to 2 p.m. on Saturday, librarians will be available to showcase services and answer questions, and special collections will be open to showcase materials.
- 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, and 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday - Western's Music Library will be holding an open house, allowing guests to learn about the musical resources available to the Western community.
- 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday, noon to 4 p.m. Saturday - The Western Gallery presents "Michael Vanderbyl Design," a showcase of the works of world renowned multidisciplinary artist and industrial designer Michael Vanderbyl. - 2 p.m. to dusk Friday, noon to dusk Saturday and Sunday - Lakewood, Western's waterfront facility, located at 2410 Lake Whatcom Blvd., will be open for visitors to enjoy the lake, BBQ equipment, volleyball court, canoes, kayaks and rowboats. Sailboats and windsurfing require a sailing card. There is a minimal fee for some equipment. Must have a student or alumni present with a valid WWU identification card.
- 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Friday, 1 p.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday and Sunday - Fairhaven College's annual ENDFAIR Music Festival will take place in Fairhaven College's main lounge and courtyard. ENDFAIR features live music by a diverse selection of bands from WWU, Bellingham and the Pacific Northwest. The event boasts many fun activities as well as the opportunity to learn about and support the nonprofit Slum Doctor Programme. All ages welcome. - 5:30 p.m. - Join the Western Alumni Association for an evening of celebration as Western honors 11 alumni and an alumni family. Tickets are $50 for WWU alumni association members and $60 for general admission. - 6:30 p.m. and 8 p.m. - Planetarium Shows, Haggard Hall 313. The show includes a fantasy rocket trip through the stars, swirling galaxies and animated legends of springtime star lore. Not recommended for children under 8 years of age. The event is free, but space is limited and tickets are required and can be obtained online at http://nssfo.wwu.edu/. - 7:30 p.m. - The WWU Theatre Arts Department presents "Nine Parts of Desire," a portrayal of the ordinary lives of Iraqi women. The performance is an unusually timely meditation on the ancient, modern and the feminine in a country overshadowed by war. Tickets are available through the PAC box office and cost $9 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission.
- 8 p.m. - Ford Hill Piano Scholarship Recital Featuring Jonathan Mann, PAC Mainstage. Nominated for the 2008 Classical Fellowship Awards of the American Pianists Association, Mann has taught and performed across the United States and Europe. Tickets are available through the PAC box office and cost $8 for students, $12 for seniors and $16 for general admission.
Saturday, May 16
- 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. - Information booths in Red Square and the Academic Instructional Center Plaza will provide Showtime Family Weekend schedules and other WWU and Bellingham area resources.
- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Bellingham Farmers Market on Chestnut and Railroad Avenue in Downtown Bellingham. Visit http://www.bellinghamfarmers.org/ for more information.
- Noon on Saturday to 8 a.m. Sunday - Western Relay for Life. Relay for Life is an American Cancer Society event held on Western's track. This all-day and all-night team event celebrates those who have survived cancer, encourages those who are fighting and remembers those who have been lost. - 1 p.m. - Outdoor Sculpture Tour led by the Western Gallery. Enjoy a tour of nearly 30 sculptures from Western's internationally renowned Outdoor Sculpture Collection. Tour leaves from the Red Square Information Booth.
- 1 p.m. - 10th Annual Family Golf Tournament, North Bellingham Golf Course. $55 per person. Par 72 course with panoramic views of Mount Baker. Tournament played using a two- or four-person scramble, shotgun start. Registration fee includes green fees (carts are optional and are available for $15) and awards dinner. Space must be reserved by May 8.
- 1 p.m. - Campus Tree Tour, Red Square fountain. Trees have been planted all over WWU's campus during its century-long existence. - 3 p.m. to 5 p.m. - Ford Hill Piano Scholarship Recital artist Jonathan Mann Master Class, PAC Concert Hall. Jonathan Edward Mann will follow up his performance with a free master class.
- 5:30 p.m. - 13th Annual Spring Luau: Legends of Hawaii, Viking Union Multipurpose Room. Enjoy traditional Hawaiian food, island music and hula performances. Tickets are available through the PAC box office and are $12 for students and $17 for general admission.
- 7:30 p.m. - The WWU Department of Theatre Arts presents "Ernestine Shuswap Gets Her Trout," an alternatively comic and deeply tragic retelling of the cultural genocide committed against the ntive peoples of British Columbia. The play is based on a deposition signed in 1910 by 14 chiefs of the Thompson River Basin. Tickets are available through the PAC box office and cost $9 for students and seniors and $12 for general admission.
Saturday, May 16 and Sunday, May 17
- 10 a.m., 1 p.m. and 4 p.m. - Kayak trips on Bellingham Bay. This two-hour guided tour of Bellingham Bay is $20 per person and includes a basic introduction to sea kayaking. Registration for remaining spaces, if any, will take place at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Red Square.
- 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. - Nature Cruise, Squalicum Harbor. $75 per person for a catered cruise of Bellingham Bay and the surrounding area. View eagles, whales, sea lions and harlequin ducks while aboard the "Snow Goose," a 65-foot marine-research vessel. Reserve early due to limited space.
Sunday, May 17
- Noon to 5 p.m. - Ninth Annual "Ridin' Low in the 3-6-0" Lowrider Show, Red Square. Lowrider cars, trucks and bikes from all over the state will be on display in Red Square. There will also be taco trucks, live musical performances, jalapeño and watermelon eating contests, piñatas for kids and a car hop contest.
