Gregoire speaks to packed house at WWU's Seattle Business Forum 

 
Gov. Chris Gregoire keynoted WWU's Seattle Business Forum yesterday, and focused her speech on the themes of health-care reform and Washington's future as a green economy. The event, sponsored by the Western Foundation, raised almost $100,000 for WWU scholarships.

Speakers from Breaking the Silence tour to talk in WWU class April 15

Breaking the Silence

Friends of the Congo and HEAL Africa will speak on campus April 15. They're currently on their Breaking the Silence tour, revealing a conflict that has claimed 6 million lives in the Democratic Republic of Congo and highlighting the work of Congolese who put themselves in danger every day through their dedication to peace-building and development initiatives.

The presentation will be made to Liz Mogford's Sociology 221 class, which meets at 2:30 p.m. in Parks Hall 146. All are welcome to attend, but space is limited.


Latino Heritage Celebration is Saturday
WWU's Latino Student Union will host its fourth annual Latino Heritage Celebration at 6 p.m. Saturday, April 18, in the Viking Union Multipurpose Room. The event will feature a presentation by keynote speaker Erasmo Gamboa, associate professor of Chicano studies and adjunct associate professor of history and Latin American studies at the University of Washington.   • Blaine Chamber, CEV to host business workshop
    Western Washington University's College of Business and Economics' Center for Economic Vitality and the Blaine Chamber of Commerce are partnering to provide a workshop designed to help businesses navigate the present economic challenges.
    The workshop will be held from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m., on Wednesday, April 29, in the Blaine School District Board Room at 765 H. St., in Blaine. Pre-registration is recommended. A light dinner will be provided by the Blaine Chamber of Commerce.

  • Caskey-Schreiber to run for County Council at-large seat
    Whatcom County Councilwoman Laurie Caskey-Schreiber has changed her mind about not seeking re-election - but she won't be seeking re-election to her same seat. Caskey-Schreiber announced Monday, April 13, that while she already decided not to seek re-election to her District 2 seat, she will vie for the At-Large position being vacated by Councilman Seth Fleetwood.
    Caskey-Schreiber, 48, is in her second term on the County Council and works in Western Washington University's sociology department.

  • Viking softball splits a doubleheader with Saint Martin's
    Sarah McEnroe won her third straight decision and pitched five shutout innings before having her scoreless inning streak end at 15 as Western Washington University held on to defeat Saint Martin's University, 6-5 in the nightcap, to earn a split of a Great Northwest Athletic Conference softball doubleheader Monday at Viking Field on the WWU campus.

  • High-school debate whiz has sights set on WWU
    Good reads: Her college plans are to attend Western Washington University next year with a goal of becoming a middle or high school English teacher. She loves good literature, including works by John Steinbeck and Mark Twain. Her favorite book is "Anna Karenina" by Leo Tolstoy.
