BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University recently unveiled the new King Endowment for Design and Dell and Rosalie King Design Lecture Series, which will be used to attract speakers to the Western Gallery who are authorities on the topic of design.
The endowment, which will fund the lecture series, was created by WWU faculty members Rosalie and Dell King. Graduates of the University of Washington, they have chosen to establish the King Endowment at Western Washington University where they work as professors in the areas of Art and Industrial Design in an effort to stress the importance of design in today's world.
The Dell and Rosalie King Design Lecture Series will make its debut with a lecture featuring internationally acclaimed designer Michael Vanderbyl. In conjunction with his "REINVENT" exhibition in the Western Gallery, Vanderbyl will offer an evening lecture at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 21, in west wing room 204 of the new Academic Instruction Center (AIC) on Western's campus. Following the lecture, a reception will be held for Vanderbyl in the Western Gallery.
The lecture is free and open to the public, but tickets are required as seating is limited. Tickets are available through the WWU Box Office at (360) 650-6146.
Both of the Kings have had extensive careers in the field of design. Dell's career has included five years with Hewlett-Packard as the medical division design manager, 30 years as corporate design manager with the Fluke Corporation, and recently seven years as the president and CEO of Walter Darwin Teague Industrial Design. In conjunction with these professional accomplishments, he has served as an adjunct professor teaching the senior industrial-design courses at Western Washington University for 25 years.
Rosalie's teaching career actually began at the University of Washington where she spent 20 years serving as chair of the Textile Science and Costume Studies Division. Following her time at the UW, Rosalie joined the faculty at Western, where she has worked for the past 25 years. She has served as a professor and chair of both the Department of Art and the Home Economics/Interior Design Department. In addition to her educational service, Rosalie has been published widely and served as an international consultant.
