BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University students, alumni and members of the Bellingham community will team up for Earth Day on Saturday, April 18, to address environmental issues through community service.
Participants will meet at 8:30 a.m. in WWU's Viking Union for light breakfast and snacks. Starbucks will provide participants with coffee and will raffle off 10 gift bags during the morning gathering.
Before heading to their work sites, participants will be addressed by a speaker from the Associated Students Environmental Center and Eileen Coughlin, WWU's vice president of Student Affairs and Academic Support Services, .
This year's service-learning sites include Franklin Park, Padden Creek and the 20th Street right of way.
Community-service activities include pulling ivy, invasive species removal, weeding, and other tasks; all service-learning projects will run until noon, and tools will be provided.
Earth Day is a national day of service that brings together WWU students, staff, faculty, alumni and community members, said Jana Brost, WWU Disability Resources graduate intern.
"This is our opportunity to give back to the beautiful Bellingham area while building relationships and restoring the environment," she said.
