BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Joseph Trimble has been awarded the International Lifetime Achievement Award for Multicultural and Diversity Counseling by the University of Toronto's Ontario Institute for Studies in Education.

The Ontario Institute for Studies and Education will present Trimble with the biannual award at the 5th Critical Multicultural Counseling and Psychotherapy Conference, to be held in Toronto on Aug. 4 and 5. Trimble will present the conference's keynote address and participate in an interview about his life and work titled "In the Therapist's Chair."
"I was overwhelmed by the news and at the same time deeply honored and humbled by the announcement," Trimble said.
Trimble received his bachelor's degree from Waynesburg College (now University) in 1961 and pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of New Hampshire, Harvard University, and the University of Oklahoma, where he received his doctorate in 1969. He has been at Western since 1979. He is the recipient of many other awards, including WWU's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1987, the Paul J. Olscamp Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 1999 and Henry Tomes Award for Distinguished Contributions to the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Psychology in 2009.
