- Gail Collins, the well-respected New York Times op-ed columnist, will talk about contemporary national politics from 4 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, in Science Lecture 150 at Western Washington University.

Collins is well known for her humor, keen insight, and astute observations and opinions about national politics and politicians.  She was also one of the New York Times reporters assigned to cover the 2008 presidential campaign. Her talk at Western is titled: "The Election and Then..."

Immediately following the talk, Collins will be signing copies of her books, "Scorpion Tongues: Gossip, Celebrity and American Politics" (Morrow, 1998 and updated in 2007), and "America's Women: 400 Years of Dolls, Drudges, Helpmates and Heroines" (Morrow, 2003).

Gail Collins became an op-ed columnist for The New York Times in July 2007.  She had previously been editorial page editor for The Times from August 2001 until the beginning of 2007, when she stepped down and began a leave in order to finish a new (not yet published) book about American women since 1960.

Collins' visit is sponsored by The New York Times, on behalf of Western's committed participation in The New York Times Readership Program, now in its fifth year. The readership program is sponsored jointly by the American Democracy Project at WWU, Associated Students, and University Residences. The goal of the program is to support Western's mission to promote effective citizenship and social responsibility in all members of the campus community.

Collins' talk is free and open to students, faculty and staff and the public.  Professors are encouraged to bring their classes; however, seating is limited. Associated Students Bookstore is coordinating the book signing, and copies of Collins' books will be available for purchase both at the bookstore and at the talk.
