BELLINGHAM - Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies faculty members Mary Cornish and Stan Tag invite community members to an upcoming workshop and poetry reading that explore the relationship between poetry and politics, hosted by the Center for Law, Diversity & Justice.
The workshop on Feb. 25 wades into the controversy of "political poetry." Among the questions: What moves us as citizens and poets to lift a voice in witness? For whom are poets allowed to speak? How do we say the unspeakable? Cornish and Tag will help students explore these questions, drawing upon examples of contemporary American poets. Students will then be encouraged to write their own poems to read at the "Poetry and Politics" reading March 4.
The workshop will be 7 to 8:30 p.m. Feb. 25 in Fairhaven 340. The reading will be March 4 from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in the Fairhaven Auditorium.
Cornish teaches poetry at Fairhaven and elsewhere at Western Washington University. Her book "Red Studio" won the 2006 FIELD Poetry Prize and was a finalist for the Washington State Book Award.
Tag teaches humanities, American literature and culture, creative writing, natural history and other topics at Fairhaven College. He has received honors from the Innovative Teaching Showcase, part of the Center for Instructional Innovation at Western.
