BELLINGHAM - The director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago will speak later this month about the relationship between human rights and human migration in an event organized by the Center for Law, Diversity & Justice.
Susan Gzesh's World Issues Forum lecture, "What do human rights principles bring to our understanding of U.S. immigrations policy?" will be noon to 1:30 p.m. Monday Feb. 23 in the Fairhaven College Auditorium.
While the current discourse on U.S. immigration policy is framed almost exclusively in domestic terms, Gzesh believes a broader analysis shows how migration begins with the failure to protect human rights in the country of origin. She advocates policies that encourage a shared responsibility for the promotion of human dignity in migrants' states of origin, transit and destination.
The lecture is sponsored by Fairhaven College of Interdisciplinary Studies, the Center for Law, Diversity & Justice, United Ministries in Higher Education and American Democracy Project.
As director of the Human Rights Program at the University of Chicago, Gzesh teaches a wide variety of courses on human rights, exploring issues such as the prohibition of torture, human rights in Mexico and Latin America and comparative human rights of citizens and non-citizens. Her research interests include the inter-relationship between human rights and migration policy. Gzesh previously served as director of the Mexico-U.S. Advocates Network, now known as Enlaces America. Fluent in Spanish, she is a legal commentator for Univision-TV, Chicago.
