BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Department of Theatre Arts will present "La Cage aux Folles" March 5-15 in the Performing Arts Center (PAC) Mainstage Theatre.
Written by Harvey Fierstein and featuring music by Jerry Herman, "La Cage aux Folles" is a hilarious and ultimately heartwarming musical featuring drag show nightclub manager Georges and his long-term partner, Albin, who transforms into "ZaZa!" - the main act in the club, La Cage aux Folles. The plot takes off as the couple finds out that their son is engaged to the daughter of Dindon, the Deputy General of the "Tradition, Family and Morality" party, and that her family is on its way to meet his parents - who are anything but traditional! "La Cage" romps gleefully through numerous plot twists and turns, love stories and a full-stop drag show as the two families meet and we learn that love, tradition, and family values can come in many different, beautiful and fulfilling packages.
Also known as "The Birdcage," this humorous musical was the first gay-themed production on Broadway and is a multiple Tony award winner including Best Broadway Musical and Best Broadway Revival of a Musical.
"La Cage aux Folles" begins at 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 5-7 and March 12-14, and at 2 p.m. on Sunday, March 8 and March 15.
