BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Joseph Trimble has won the Henry Tomes Award for Distinguished Contributions to the
Advancement of Ethnic Minority Psychology by the Council of National Psychological Associations for the Advancement of Ethnic Minority Interests and the American Psychological Associations's Society for the Psychological Study of Ethnic Minority Issues.
Trimble, a professor of Psychology, a professor in the Woodring College of Education, a Research Associate at Western's Center for Cross-Cultural Research, and the University's director of Assessment and Testing, was honored for his life's work promoting psychological and sociocultural research with indigenous populations, especially American Indians and Alaska Natives. For the past 20 years, he has been working on substance abuse and mental health prevention research models for American Indian and Alaska Native youth.
In its presentation letter, the award selection committee said Trimble's career "continues to resonate in the teaching, practice and scholarship of psychology." The award will be given at the council's awards ceremony on Jan. 14 in New Orleans.
"I would not be considered for this award or any of the awards I've received over the years without the fervent support and encouragement of people and friends at Western and elsewhere. So I share the award and its recognition with all of them, too," Trimble said.
Trimble received his bachelor's degree from Waynesburg College (now University) in 1961 and pursued graduate studies in psychology at the University of New Hampshire, Harvard University, and the University of Oklahoma, where he received his doctorate in 1969. He has been at Western since 1979. He is the recipient of many other awards, including WWU's Excellence in Teaching Award in 1987 and the Paul J. Olscamp Outstanding Faculty Research Award in 1999; he is the second faculty member at Western to receive both awards.
