BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Dance Program will host a residency with the Trisha Brown Dance Company from Jan. 6-17 as part of a major national grant they were awarded to restage an American Dance Masterpiece.

This is the third consecutive year WWU's Dance Program has received an American Masterpiece Grant from the New England Foundation for the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts, and Dance/USA to support the restaging and performance of a master work by a prominent American dance artist.

This year the grant will go towards the reconstruction of "Glacial Decoy," a work by internationally renowned choreographer Trisha Brown that has been performed around the world, including a restaging with the Paris Opera Ballet.  The work also marks Brown's first dance collaboration with Robert Rauschenberg, who designed the sets and costumes featured in "Glacial Decoy."  Rauschenberg, who died in May 2008, was an American artist famous for his innovative combinations of non-traditional materials and objects.

The WWU Dance Program is the only school in the nation to restage "Glacial Decoy" through an American Masterpiece Grant this year.

The residency will feature a soloist from the Trisha Brown Dance Company who will set the choreography on WWU's advanced dance students during open rehearsals.  Members of the public are encouraged to attend the rehearsals for an intimate look into the elegance of Trisha Brown's choreography and the recreation of a contemporary dance masterpiece.

The open rehearsals will be held at WWU's downtown dance studio, Ving!, from 6-9 p.m. Wednesday through Friday, Jan. 7-9, and Monday through Thursday, Jan. 12-15.  Ving! is located at 311 E. Holly St., in downtown Bellingham.

In conjunction with the choreographic residency, advanced WWU photography students and alumni have submitted their work for adjudication to create an adaptive reconstruction of the Rauschenberg sets.  Trisha Brown will select the visual artist who will collaborate on the set design.

The culminating performance of "Glacial Decoy" will be presented April 23-26, 2009 on the PAC Mainstage Theater as part of the WWU Faculty Dance Concert.
