Journalism professor produces "Pride of a Nation"

Journalism assistant professor John Harris has received a $5,000 grant from the Lummi Nation to produce "Pride of a Nation," a multimedia blog covering the current season of Lummi's eight-man football team. The blog, which is hosted by the Seattle P-I, is available here, including photos from Lummi's recent win over archrival Neah Bay. At right, Neah Bay and Lummi captains meet at midfield before kickoff.

    The WWU junior Industrial Design class has again created products from industrial waste as part of its annual ReMade project.

  • WWU names new VP
    Western Washington University President Bruce Shepard is bringing in an old colleague as the new vice president for University Relations. Steve Swan, the assistant chancellor for University Advancement at the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, will start Jan. 5. Shepard was chancellor at that university until taking the WWU president position this summer. Stories on Swan's hiring also appeared in the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel and the Green Bay Press Gazette.

  • Vikings place players on GNAC all-star teams
    Western Washington University had four first-team selections and the Vikings' Travis Connell was named Coach of the Year on the 2008 Great Northwest Athletic Conference Women's Soccer All-Star team announced. The Vikings football team placed 13 players on the GNAC football All-Star teams, including running back Randall Eldridge.

    It was January 1945, and Army 2nd Lt. Stanley Daugert was a long way from Columbia University, where he had been working toward a doctorate in philosophy before his life was swept up in a global war. He was standing on a stretch of beach on the island of Luzon in the Philippines, straining his eyes hoping to spot Gen. Douglas MacArthur, as an occasional mortar round from Japanese defenders exploded on the sand.

    "I'm not so sure it isn't close to a crisis," said Michael Henniger, associate dean of the Woodring College of Education at Western Washington University in Bellingham. Along with Central Washington University, WWU is the state's top producer of new teachers. "There's pretty good evidence" of a role model need, Henniger said. "From watching kids in school environment, men are just kind of like magnets in schools. If a man goes into a school, (he's) pretty much swamped with kids."

  • McCann stays dedicated, emerges at WR for Vikings
    A year ago, Pat McCann was in football purgatory, relegated to the practice squad at Western Washington University. Just a few days before the season opener, he was ruled ineligible because of transfer rules, McCann could practice but not play. "I was really close to quitting," said McCann, an all-league receiver his senior year at Olympia High School. "I was so frustrated."
