New Business and Financial Affairs policies are available for comment

Business and Financial Affairs has posted for 30-day campus review the following two policies:

* POL-U5620.05 Using Bicycles on Campus. The proposed policy is a revision of the current Bicycle and Traffic Regulations policy and applies to all individuals riding, walking, parking or otherwise operating a bicycle on campus.

* POL-U5620.06 Using Skateboards on Campus. The proposed policy is a revision to the current Skateboard and In-line Skate policy and applies to all individuals riding, skating, parking or otherwise operating a skateboard, longboard, foot scooter, electric personal assistive mobility device (EPAMD) or similar devices on campus property. The purpose of this policy is to ensure the safe operation, use and parking of these devices on campus.

The draft policies were reviewed by groups and individuals across campus and revised to reflect their input. A 30-day comment period is required prior to the final draft review by the Executive Policy Group. The policies will be posted until Oct. 24, and the campus community is encouraged to review these documents here

Written comments may be sent to policies@wwu.edu or to the university policy coordinator at mailstop 1420.

The Bellingham Herald

  • Bellingham Development Authority gets started
The group's members agreed to name former Mayor Ken Hertz their interim chairman until permanent officers can be chosen next year. Hertz said he wants to put a high priority on opening lines of communication with the Port of Bellingham, the Waterfront Advisory Group, and the Viking Development partnership between the port and Western Washington University.
  • Is Rossi-Gregoire rematch an east-west fight?
Washington is leaning heavily toward Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama, said Todd Donovan, a Western Washington University political science professor. "Yet the governor's race is a tossup," he said. "Again."
  • Port of Bellingham to raze three former GP buildings
Port of Bellingham officials say they are planning to demolish three red-brick industrial buildings adjoining the old Georgia-Pacific Corp. tissue mill that they once hoped to restore as part of the waterfront redevelopment. Rick Benner, Western Washington University's director of facilities planning and development, added that the university had studied the site's board mill building as a possible part of WWU's new waterfront campus, and concluded that refitting it would be too costly.
  • McKenna leads in AG race
A bruising governor's race and hot campaign for president have sucked most of the air out of other local contests. Combine that with a poor economy that has voters focused on pocketbook issues, and unseating a popular, well-known incumbent becomes even harder, Western Washington University political scientist Todd Donovan said.

Seattle Times

  • College fair helps students, parents find the right school
About 20,000 high-school students and their parents were expected to attend the free National College Fair, which runs through noon today at the Washington State Convention & Trade Center. Western Washington University Director of Admissions Karen Copetas said schools are looking less at standardized-test scores such as the SAT or ACT, and more at high-school grades and the quality of the courses.

The Whitman College Pioneer

  • Tree-hugging through the ages: Environmental activism at Whitman
Geology and Environmental Studies Professor Bob Carson has been impressed with the efforts of individual students over the years, but added there was a lot of work to be done before Whitman would be on par with schools like Oberlin College, Middlebury College, Western Washington University or The Evergreen State College.
