VIKINGS CLAIM FIRST WIN OF THE SEASON 

The Viking football team traveled to Arcata, Calif., last Saturday and earned its first win of the year, beating the Humboldt State Lumberjacks 30-14.

Center for International Studies launches lunch-time Lecture Series

Western's Center for International Studies begins its annual "lunch-time" lecture series on Tuesday, Sept. 30. The series features Western and visiting scholars presenting on a wide range of topics, including international trade, global literature, international education and current world issues.

All lectures are Noon - 1 pm in College Hall 131. Most are on Tuesdays, except when otherwise noted below, and are open to all faculty, staff and students.

Presenters for fall quarter 2008 are:

Sept. 30: Christine Compston, WWU Fellowships Office "Fulbright Grants and Other Fellowships at WWU"

Oct. 7: Steve Robinson, Director, Intensive English Program "The International Student at WWU: Challenges & Opportunities"

Oct. 14: Vickie Farmer, Intensive English Program instructor "Involving International Students in the Classroom"

Oct. 21: Massimiliano Tomasi, Dept. of Modern & Classical Languages "Study Abroad: Italy"

MONDAY, Oct. 27: John Purdy, Dept. of English "Indigenous Literature and Transatlantic Scholarship?"

Nov. 4: Edward Vajda, Dept. of Modern & Classical Languages "Native Siberia, the Ket Language, and the Peopling of the Americas"

WEDNESDAY, Nov. 12: Vernon Johnson, Political Science "Race, Ethnicity and Class: Contesting Identities in Contemporary South Africa"

    A Montana judge threw the book at a man found guilty of stealing documents from more than 100 libraries in Alberta and the United States, including WWU, where he was finally caught.

  • Great Falls man gets 2 1/2 years for WWU book thefts
    James Brubaker, a smallish, 74-year-old man, was escorted into a Great Falls federal courtroom Monday afternoon, where he exchanged friendly greetings with the prosecutor. He walked out 45 minutes later to begin serving a 2 1/2 year prison term for stealing rare and valuable documents from libraries across the West.
  • Book expert: library theft not unusual
    An expert on the theft of rare books said Monday he is not surprised James Brubaker of Great Falls was able to steal documents from libraries in broad daylight.

    Western Washington University's Caleb Jessup and David Johnson were selected the Great Northwest Athletic Conference Football Players of the Week on defense and special teams, respectively.
