BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University student John Hayes of Redmond was awarded the Killam Fellowship for fall 2008.
The Killam Fellowships Program awards undergraduate university students from each country a bi-national exchange between Canada and the United States, a $5,000 scholarship, transportation funds, and health insurance abroad. Killam recipients are also able to participate in two conferences at each nation's capital and an orientation meeting in Ottawa, Ontario.
Hayes will attend McGill University in Montreal, Quebec fall semester, using his transportation dollars to travel between the two countries. He hopes to conduct research and learn more about French-Canadian culture and the city of Montreal while studying at McGill. He is also looking forward to meeting other fellowship recipients.
"I hope to create connections with other fellowship members that will help me with my future goals of solving environmental problems via international research teams," Hayes said.
Hayes is a junior at WWU majoring in Chemistry. He plans to continue studying at McGill for the remainder of 2008 using another scholarship from the Canadian consulate.
The program, now in its final year, was designed as a five-year pilot to foster understanding between citizens of each country. The program is administered by the Foundation for Educational Exchange between Canada and the United States.
