Spokane Resident Elected WWU Associated Students President

BELLINGHAM - Erik Lowe, son of Aaron Lowe and Denise Beail of Spokane,  has been elected Western Washington University's Associated Students president for the 2008-2009 academic year.

The Associated Students (AS) is both the association of all WWU students and the official student governing body. The AS is responsible for providing a framework for a variety of experiential learning opportunities and serving as a vehicle for student involvement in the governance of the university.

As president, Lowe will be chairperson of AS board meetings, oversee AS operations, and represent the Associated Students to the university's Board of Trustees. Lowe said he wants to take a budgeting focus as president this year, and work with the administration to improve how AS funds are spent.  He said he wants the $2.3 million in the AS annual budget to be used as efficiently as possible.

"Every year there are ways we could have spent the money better," Lowe said. "It's important not to think that just because you have $12,000 in your [individual program] budget, you can spend it on whatever you want."

Lowe, who was elected AS president for the 2008-2009 academic year by Western students this past spring quarter, spent the past year working as AS vice president for Legislative and Governmental Affairs. He served as executive vice president of WWU's Young Democrats for the past two years and is involved in Students for Civic Engagement at Western.

Lowe is a senior working toward completing a double major in Political Science and History. After graduating from Western next spring, he hopes to attend law school at George Washington University in Washington D.C. He would like to focus on public policy and governmental law at George Washington.
