BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's annual literary arts publication, Jeopardy Magazine, will celebrate the release of its 2008 edition from 4 to 6 p.m. on Wednesday, May 21, in Viking Union 565.
The event, which is free and open to the public, will feature readings by writers published in the magazine and on Jeopardy Webzine, the magazine's online publication. Presenters will include WWU faculty members Carlos Martinez and Timothy Pilgrim, as well as students Rose Slaton and Jory Mickelson, and alumnus Aylen Paul Rounds.
Mickelson, a senior from Stevensville, Mont., majoring in Creative Writing, published four poems in this year's magazine. At the release party, he will read "Arcanophobia," a poem about the fear of stage magicians.
Slaton, a junior from Seattle in the Creative Writing program, published two prose pieces and one visual art piece. She plans to read "The Harmonic Telegraph," a fictional description of how Slaton imagines Alexander Graham Bell might have appeared while working on his invention, the telephone, during the 19th century.
"I enjoy readings of fictional work because I feel that there are often certain tones and emotions in the writing which can be conveyed in a stronger sense through the spoken word," said Slaton.
A copy of Jeopardy Magazine, and refreshments, will be provided to those who attend. For more information, visit http://jeopardy.wwu.edu/.
