BELLINGHAM - Western Washington University's Performing Arts Center (PAC) Series presents the Ōn Ensemble in concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 16, in the PAC Concert Hall.
The four young musicians of Ōn Ensemble (pronounced "ohn") base their music in traditional taiko rhythms, while adding acoustic elements, various percussion instruments, electronic influences and Tuvan overtone singing to achieve their innovative sound. The members have all studied and performed with renowned masters of traditional and contemporary music and dance in the United States and Japan and in 2002 they received the Duane Ebata Memorial Fund Award at Los Angeles' Japan America Theater, "in support and recognition of emerging artists of promise who are furthering the development of Asian Pacific American performing arts."
Their debut album, "Dust and Sand," and their latest release, "Ukiyo Live," have earned critical acclaim for their brilliantly conceived original sound. According to a CD Baby review, "Their music has a calm and meditative center about it - there is a steadiness, a wholesome, humble beauty that journeys inward for more variety as opposed to adding on ideas from the outside."
Tickets for the concert range from $16 to $25 and can be purchased at the WWU Box Office. A limited selection of tickets will be available at Village Books and the Community Food Co-op.
The Western Box Office is open 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday and one hour prior to the performance. For individual tickets or disability accommodations, contact the WWU Box Office, (360) 650-6146 or visit http://www.tickets.wwu.edu/.
