SAE organizes a series of collegiate design competitions that allow student teams from around the world to design, build and compete against one another in a variety of events. Students are required to develop a vehicle and strategies to enable them to be successful in the competition as they learn and apply valuable skills that they can take with them into their future careers.
Western’s award-winning Baja SAE team works together to produce an all-terrain vehicle to be evaluated in the competition. Western also has an award-winning Formula SAE team which produces a formula-racing vehicle.
Each year the competition moves to a different location, which allows interested groups the opportunity to plan, organize and host a regional event. Following the event in 2010, WWU has once again accepted the challenge of hosting the Western U.S. Regional Competition in 2013. The scheduled static events include design presentations, sales presentations and technical inspection at the Fairgrounds. The dynamic events at Hannegan Speedway will include individual acceleration, hill climb, rock crawl and maneuverability courses, as well as a four-hour endurance run on Sunday, May 19.
The organizing committee is looking for additional sponsors and volunteers for the event. For more information and a detailed schedule please visit http://www.wwu.edu/bajasae/ or contact Peggy Warner at (360)650-4128 or Steven Fleishman at (360) 650-2914.
