BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University’s College of Business and Economics (CBE) will host Stephen Barrett for its Strategic Management Executive Strategy Speaker Series at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 1 in Academic West 204 on Western’s campus.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
Barrett is a retired executive with over 35 years of experience in the electric power industry. Barrett began his career in 1972 with Southern California Edison (SCE). He worked for SCE for 17 years in various positions including long-range planning, regulatory affairs, operations and renewable and alternative generation development.
Following his time with SCE, Barrett moved to London where he established international operations for Edison Mission Energy. While overseas, Barrett was the head of business development in Europe and, later, in Asia. Barrett next served as the chief executive of Contact Energy Limited, an electricity generation and retailing company based in New Zealand. During his time with the company, Contact Energy had a market capitalization in excess of $3 billion and was the second largest on the New Zealand stock exchange.
Since retiring in 2005, Barrett has done consulting work in the U.S. and New Zealand. Barrett has also served on the board of directors of Meridian Energy USA, a developer, owner and operator of central-station solar photovoltaic power plants in the Southwest U.S.
In June 2010, Barrett completed his master’s degree at Western as part the University’s Accelerated MBA Program.
The Western College of Business and Economics Strategic Management Executive Strategy Speaker Series program brings senior business leaders to campus to interact with students and share their perspectives on strategic management, leadership and professional development. The Speaker Series is presented by the CBE’s Center for Excellence in Management Education.
