Western Today

On campus

Merle Prim leans forward in his chair with a huge grin. He's talking about students, one of his favorite subjects, and he's getting into it.

Prim is proud of his former charges, and he could talk for hours about the brilliant minds he's mentored over the years in his psychology classes at Western Washington University. He remembers their names, he tracks their careers. There's the student working as senior scientist at the Federal Aviation Administration. There are the former students now at Microsoft, at Gonzaga, at Ohio State University. He goes on. One ex-student is a carpenter, another is a hospital chief of staff. Then there's the post-doctorate fellow at the University of Texas, Austin. Prim, collar popped on his polo shirt, leans back and stops listing names. But he doesn't have to; he can think of many more.

In the spotlight

The Western Washington University Board of Trustees today approved the university’s 2011-12 operating budget, tuition rates for 2011-13, and the university’s 2011-13 capital budget.

The 2012-13 operating budget will be reviewed during the course of the coming year and offered to the trustees for their approval next June.

Tim Wynn, director of Facilities Management at Western, is planning to retire this summer.

“It will be quite a challenge for anyone to follow in Tim’s footsteps as FM director because he has simply done a superb job and his leadership over the past 10 years has helped the university achieve many very noteworthy accomplishments,” said Richard Van Den Hul, vice president for Business and Financial Affairs.

In this video, Wynn reflects on building construction, removing the ivy from Old Main, the perils of being the one in charge of determining whether to close the university because of snow, and more.
