BELLINGHAM – Western Washington University assistant professor of Journalism Sheila Webb was awarded the WWU 2011 Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award at the recent Service-Learning Showcase on Thursday, May 19, for her work in teaching the J466: Advanced Visual Journalism course and its work with local nonprofits such as the SISU Children’s Fund, Whatcom Watch and Allied Arts.

“In our field, the ability to craft, frame, and execute a message is critical, and service-learning allows me and my students to do that,” Webb said. “Through service-learning, my students develop an appreciation for social and civic responsibility, while developing teamwork and leadership skills.”
J446 is the capstone course and a service-learning class in the Visual Journalism sequence. WWU’s Center for Service-Learning hosted the showcase during Western’s Scholars Week to celebrate collaborative scholarship and service projects between students, professors and community organizations.
Webb said she is both honored and pleased to receive this award and noted how supportive the Service-Learning staff have been in facilitating faculty projects. “Service-learning is a way to leverage our skills to benefit our community, something I find both necessary and deeply rewarding,” Webb said.
Webb has taught at Western since 2008 and has previously taught at the University of South Dakota, the University of Wisconsin and Marquette University. Her research area is the cultural role of the media, particularly the role and rhetoric of news narratives in magazines.
